The Boxster in Tow The trailer for the Boxster started out as a basic open steel trailer from Econo-Trailer (name says it all huh?). I've since added a storage box for all my "accessories" and a tire rack for extra wheels and tires. This also helps out immensely with weight distribution on the hitch. In order for a trailer to tow without swaying, approximately 10% of the total weight must be on the hitch. With a rear-engined car, this is a challenge. A lot of Porsche owners end up with a custom trailer ($$) with axle placement specific to rear-engined cars or they back their car on the trailer. I didn't want to do either so I opted to add 600 or so lbs. to the front. I still need to have the car completely forward on the trailer, but it tows nicely. Another feature of the trailer is a "beaver tail". This refers to the downward slant of the rear ramps to assist in loading hte vehicle. I still had to make wooden extensions (seen in the bottom pic) after having the car lowered with H&R springs. With only 4 1/2" of ground clearance, it has to be a slow, sloping ramp. The Lexus My other Towing Option is a 1999 Lexus LX470. With a 32valve V-8 and auto-leveling suspension, it makes great tow vehicle for long trips. Gas Mileage remains a respectable 13mpg while towing.
Here's a picture of our first RV towing setup. Here's the latest in traveling creature comfort. It's a 2000 Georgie-Boy Pursuit. It's 33' long with a 12' slide-out. For more pic's, click here ). At 14,000lbs. for the RV and 4,500lbs. for the car/trailer combo, it's a lot of weight (almost 20,000lbs.) and a long vehicle (33' + 20' ).
