Big Falls at Squire's Memorial Park Once onto the mainland of Newfoundland, the first destination of our journey was a campground just outside the Gros Morne National Park. It was here that we planned to camp alongside a major Salmon Fishing River in the heart of the Salmon Run. Utilizing our camping directory, we noticed a campground with a "water park" along the route. As we pulled in, we realized that this was not Six Flags and Beth immediately wanted to move on. Unfortunately, the entrance was so tight, I wasn't sure how I could. So we stopped in to check things out. It turns out that we would be spending the night there and driving our Jeep to Squires in the morning as we were told "it's 12 miles or so to the park and the last 8 miles are not paved". With the recent rains, apparently the road was in no condition for an RV. Not sure if he was being truthful, we decided to stay anyway. As we found out the next day, we made the right decision. Once we found our camping space, we were delighted to find out that areas of Newfoundland are infested with mosquitoes. Like nothing I had ever experienced before in my life. Swarms attacking you if you went outside, swarms hanging on the window screens. It was unbelievable. Fortunately, as we later found out, it wasn't nearly that bad anywhere else we went on the rest of our journey. So, finally morning arrives and we drive to Squires to meet our fishing guides. In summary, the whole family (with the exception of Ethan) had a great day fishing (Ethan had a great day playing) although we didn't catch anything. Had it just been Brandon and I, or Beth and I, we would have been able to spend the time necessary to catch something. We learned a lot about the whole process and I almost had one. It turns out that the Canadians like to make it a bit harder to catch the salmon by making you fish with a barbless hook. This means that you need to keep a delicate balance between tension that won't let them get away and not to much so that they snap your line. Tough! Here's some shots from the day including some poses with other people's fish!
