Hot Lap Timing System The Hot Lap System is an in-car lap timing setup that is quite useful at the track. Our Club provides a transmitter for all Driver's Ed events so all that you need is the receiver and display. The receiver needs a clear line of sight mounting for best results, so this presents a challenge to Hard-Top / Soft Top equipped Boxster's. The following pictures illustrate the fabrication that I conjured up to solve this issue. In addition, I wanted a quick way to mount my display unit without making any permanent mounting holes. The Receiver The Contraption is mounted to a support rod in my soft-top. I chose it because I wanted to keep the distance of the bracket as short as possible to minimize vibration. Since the rod is only 3/4" thick, I had to put a spacer in the back of the bracket (see detailed photo below) to ensure a tight fit. Again, the bracket is just a piece of aluminum L channel that was sawed to length with a hacksaw. The U-bolt is the smalled one that I could find and the spacer is the bracket from a larger one that I purchased earlier. The Receiver has a threaded hole and screw with a plastic piece intended for direct mounting to a roll bar. I removed the plastic piece ans used the original screw to mount the bracket. The Display I got the idea for the hotlap display from the garage door opener that I had clipped to the center console. I removed the bracket from a spare opener and used a "L" bracket to complete the setup. It's a little loose, it would probably be better with two clips, but it worked fine at the track and no one questioned the mounting during tech inspection. |
