Grand-Am Cup Race and Daytona 24hr Endurance Race 2001 This year, I had the opportunity to join the Turbo Performance Team at their debut Grand-Am cup race. The race was a two hour endurance format and took place on Friday prior to the 24hr race. The team qualified 10th and finished 6th. Not bad for the first outing with a car that was never on the track and one driver who never drove Daytona. The highlights, photo's and information can be accessed by clicking on the Turbo Performance Team link listed above. As for Daytona, you wouldn't think that it could rain in Florida for 4 straight days. Especially since they have been having a drought. But it did, and we dealt with it. Fortunately, it didn't rain constantly and Speedvision was covering the race from flag to flag so we could watch from the RV when it was pouring. Race Information and stats can be found at the Grand American Road Racing Site I would say that this picture typified the weather for this year.
The opening Lap for the Sportsracers and the Porsche's (a record 34 in the field)
Dale Earnhart's presence this year in the Corvette brought our some NASCAR fans
I found this car from Denmark quite interesting to look at.
The racing is tough in the overnight hours with little lighting in the infield part of the course.
In AM, you can view the carnage that occured in the overnight hours. This car ended up winning the American GT Class.
A couple rules modifications allowed a pair of Porsche GT1 cars to participate this year.
Grinding out the Final Hour
A 996 based Porsche was 2nd overall behind the #2 Corvette Race winner.
Despite the weather, it was a great weekend!
