24Hr. Pics Page Following are some pics of the racing action, most of the time, I took photo's from the roof of my RV or at the edge of the infield course. There's a couple shots of the high-banking, but it was hard to get close enough for a good photo. Of local and personal significance, the G&W Motorwerkes team( http://www.gandw.com ) placed 3rd in GTU with their 07 car. There were 35 starters in GTU with 28 being Porsches. Greg Merril, my PCA driving instructor for Driver's Ed last season, took the wheel as one of 5 drivers.
The fastest class of car is the "SportsRacer" class, with average qualifying speeds of around 125MPH and straightline speeds in excess of 170MPH, it was hard to pan the camera fast enough to get a good photo!
There were only two Ferrari's in GTU, I don't believe that either one finished. Lots of Porsches in GTO and GTU class though (38 started)
As I mentioned before, the SportsRacers were the fastest cars. The Blue Flag means "faster car overtaking" which the Cadillac most certainly is about to do. Did I mention that Racing goes on through the night? Adds to the difficulty of the 24hr as almost 10 hours are run in darkness. In the end, the #91 Viper pictured below was the overall winner. Driven by Tommy Archer to beat the #3 Corvette driven by Ron Fellows by a margin of only 35 seconds. The closest 24hr. finish in history. 3rd and 4th place were taken by Vipers number 92 and 93 from the same team. The 5th spot was the highest finish for a SportsRacer vehicle. The #20 driven by a famouns group, Rob Dyson, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Max Papis and James Weaver. |
